Remembering Paul Robeson Spanish Civil War 1938

Paul Robeson’s support of the resistance against the rise of Fascism during the Spanish Civil War is remembered with dances set to Robeson’s recordings of Spanish Civil War resistance songs which he sang during his trip to Spain in 1938 after the bombing of Guernica, raising funds to support the resistance movement as well as the efforts of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade the multi racial and national freedom fighters. While in Spain, Robeson was drawn to Flamenco’s Cante Jondo (soulful songs) finding a kinship with black spirituals. The program also includes dramatic Flamenco dance works inspired by other great artists of the Spanish Civil War period: Picasso’s famous painting, Guernica, music by Manuel de Falla and Anda Jaleo, the song by the great Spanish poet/composer, Federico Garcia Lorca who was murdered during the Spanish Civil War. Alborada’s Assistant Director, Lisa Botalico conceived the program and choreographed the dances for Alborada’s dancers. A PowerPoint presentation supports the lecture.

Grant funding has been provided by the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners through a grant award from the Middlesex County Cultural & Arts Trust Fund.
